Hello, I’m Kou. I will introduce my Koraidon team that successfully qualified in the PJCS Qualifiers Round 2 (Global Challenge). The English version is written after the Japanese article.

Teambuilding Process
New Koraidon Team Concept
Koraidon
’s ability, Orichalcum Pulse, not only sets up sunlight and boosts its attack power, but also activates Protosynthesis and strengthens Fire-type moves. I think Koraidon's sheer power places it among the top-tier Legendary Pokémon, alongside Shadow Rider Calyrex and Miraidon. However, despite Koraidon being the 3rd most-used Legendary Pokémon in Singles and achieving multiple seasonal first-place finishes, its performance in Doubles has been relatively weaker. It ranks only 7th among Legendary Pokémon in usage and has struggled to secure major victories in Ranked Battles and World Chanpionships. (Although Koraidon would later go on to win EUIC, at this point, it had yet to claim a major tournament title.)
To understand why Koraidon teams have struggled to perform well in Doubles, I analyzed and compared their strategies in both Singles and Doubles. In Singles, many teams adopt a playstyle that focuses on switching into Pokémon with favorable matchups to maintain an advantage. Doubles teams tend to favor a face-off playstyle, where Pokémon remain on the field regardless of whether the matchup is favorable or not. I concluded that the main reason Koraidon teams underperform in Doubles is the lack of pivot Pokémon that can safely switch into unfavorable matchups. As a result, they rely heavily on prediction to avoid disadvantageous situations, making them inherently less consistent.
Therefore, my goal was to build a Koraidon team in Doubles that could balance strong face-off play with the ability to pivot and switch strategically. Instead of choosing between a face-off or pivot-based approach when selecting four Pokémon after seeing the opponent’s lineup—a strategy commonly used in Singles pivot teams—I aimed to create a team where all four selected Pokémon could dynamically adjust their playstyle based on the situation.
A Versatile Koraidon Team Balancing Face-Off Strength and Strategic Switching
To bring the team concept to life, I outlined the key roles Koraidon needs to fulfill and the essential qualities required from its teammates.
Koraidon
's Key Roles:
- As the main attacker, Koraidon should be able to KO opponents in a single move, provided it receives even a small amount of chip damage support from allies (such as Icy Wind or Fake Out).
- On average, it should be capable of taking down either two regular Pokémon or one Legendary Pokémon.
- By setting up sunny weather upon entering the field, it enhances its teammates’ performance.
Essential Qualities for Teammates:
- Must be able to handle the remaining opponents (one Legendary + one regular Pokémon, or three regular Pokémon).
- Increase Koraidon’s chances of moving first.
- Apply chip damage to opponents before Koraidon attacks.
- Provide a pivot option that can safely switch in and absorb hits.
- Counter the opponent’s Tailwind and Trick Room strategies
* Regarding point 1, it may seem that a significant burden is placed on Koraidon’s teammates. However, one of Koraidon’s biggest strengths is its ability to set up sunny weather and boost its allies. Maximizing the potential of regular Pokémon is a defining feature of this team.
The first Pokémon I chose to pair with Koraidon was Flutter Mane
, as it excels at addressing points 1–3 at a high level.
Flutter Mane
’s Role:
- Acts as a fast secondary attacker, steadily chipping away at the opponent’s HP (3).
- On average, deals damage equivalent to one regular Pokémon’s HP (1).
- Uses its high Speed to lower the opponent’s Speed with moves like Icy Wind, increasing the likelihood of its teammates moving first (2).
- With Focus Sash, Protect, and Icy Wind, it provides counterplay against Tailwind (5).
Assuming that Koraidon and Flutter Mane are always selected, the next step was to decide on the third Pokémon. I needed an attacker that could handle the remaining opponent’s Pokémon—either one Legendary or two regular Pokémon—as outlined in Point 1. This was the same workload expected of Koraidon, and achieving it without taking advantage of sunny weather would be nearly impossible. Additionally, since this Pokémon needed to counter opposing Legendary Pokémon, and the most commonly used ones vary significantly in type and stats, I opted for a flexible slot that would allow me to choose the best option based on the opponent’s Legendary Pokémon.
Chi-Yu
was selected for its ability to outspeed even Shadow Rider Calyrex with a Choice Scarf and for its sun-boosted, Tera Fire Heat Wave, which matches the power of Kyogre’s rain-boosted Water Spout. Walking Wake
was chosen for its capability to one-shot a 207 HP / 165 SpD Ice Rider Calyrex with a sun-boosted, Tera Water Choice Specs Hydro Steam. It also has the flexibility to fire off a high-powered Weather Ball even in rain and boasts natural resistances to the signature moves of both Ice Rider Calyrex and Kyogre. Through terastallization into their original types, both Pokémon reach offensive levels comparable to Legendary Pokémon, effectively making the team function as if it has two Legendaries. In terms of matchups against opposing Legendary Pokémon (including their supporting teammates), Chi-Yu performs well against Shadow Rider Calyrex, Miraidon, Terapagos, and Zamazenta, while Walking Wake excels against Ice Rider Calyrex, Kyogre, and Groudon.
For the fourth pokemon, I needed a Pokémon that could fulfill two key roles: (4) serving as a defensive pivot and (5) providing counterplay against Tailwind and Trick Room strategies. I initially tested an Assault Vest Incineroar as the pivot, but since it shared the same typing as Chi-Yu, the team became overly vulnerable to Ground-type attacks. I switched to an Assault Vest Landorus-Therian
, which offered much greater stability thanks to its immunity to Ground-type moves. While Landorus-Therian performed well in that regard, it struggled against Ice Rider Calyrex. I added Clefairy
as a partner, supporting Walking Wake’s Water Tera form in countering Ice Rider Calyrex under Trick Room. What set Clefairy apart from other Ice Rider Calyrex answers was its Friend Guard ability, which provided passive damage reduction for the whole team just by being on the field.
A week before the tournament, I took another look at the team and considered replacing Landorus-Therian with Rillaboom
. While I had no major complaints about Landorus-Therian, its lack of offensive power sometimes felt like a drawback. Additionally, Clefairy had exceeded expectations, proving highly effective against physically offensive Legendaries like Zamazenta, Koraidon, and Groudon. This meant Landorus-Therian was primarily used for matchups against Shadow Rider Calyrex, Miraidon, Kyogre, and Terapagos. Given that role, I realized that Rillaboom’s stronger offensive presence would be more valuable. After testing the change, it felt like a perfect fit.
Individual Pokémon Breakdown
Koraidon
@ Choice Band
Tera Type: Fire
Ability: Orichalcum Pulse
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 177(12)-185(236)-136(4)-94-121(4)-205(252)
Moves: Flare Blitz / Collision Course / Temper Flare / U-turn
- Collision Course guarantees an OHKO on a 187 HP / 111 Def Hearthflame Ogerpon.
- Collision Course has an 87.5% chance to OHKO on a 176 HP / 120 Def Rapid-Strike Urshifu or Miraidon.
- Collision Course has a 62.5% chance to OHKO on a 199 HP / 198 Def Zamazenta with Dauntless Shield.
- Temper Flare guarantees an OHKO on a 159 HP / 92 Def Flutter Mane.
- Temper Flare guarantees an OHKO on a 221 HP / 132 Def Amoonguss.
I chose Choice Band to ensure Koraidon could one-shot opponents even without Terastallization. Due to its immense offensive power, maximizing Speed was crucial to increase the chances of attacking first, so I opted for a Jolly nature with max Speed investment. Temper Flare was included as an alternative to Flare Blitz against Pokémon like Amoonguss and Flutter Mane, which Koraidon might not want to take recoil damage from.

Flutter Mane
@ Focus Sash
Tera Type: Normal
Ability: Protosynthesis
Nature: Timid
EVs: 131(4)-67-75-187(252)-155-205(252)
Moves: Dazzling Gleam / Shadow Ball / Icy Wind / Protect
The Tera Type is Normal to counter Shadow Rider Calyrex. Since there are many situations where multi-target moves are useful, Dazzling Gleam has high priority for inclusion. If opting for Moonblast as the strongest single-target Fairy move, Shadow Ball would need to be removed. However, having a Ghost-type attack is also highly valuable, making the choice difficult.

Chi-Yu
@ Choice Scarf
Tera Type: Fire
Ability: Beads of Ruin
Nature: Modest
EVs: 139(68)-90-101(4)-198(196)-141(4)-150(236)
Moves: Heat Wave / Dark Pulse / Flamethrower / Overheat
- Astral Barrage from 217 SpA Choice Specs Shadow Rider Calyrex is a guaranteed 3HKO.
- Spe EVs allow it to outspeed Adamant Choice Scarf Urshifu.
Sun-boosted Fire Tera is incredibly powerful. In this team, Chi-Yu uses Terastallization more often than Koraidon. The HP and Special Attack investment follows the optimal stat balance based on Comprehensive Performance Index in Jiro’s blog, 'Theorycrafting is Powerful,' assuming a first-move probability P = 0.8.
Usage Rate: 65%
Walking Wake
@ Choice Specs
Tera Type: Water
Ability: Protosynthesis
Nature: Modest
EVs: 201(212)-92-112(4)-194(252)-105(12)-133(28)
Moves: Hydro Steam / Draco Meteor / Weather Ball / Dragon Pulse
- Sun-boosted Tera Water Hydro Steam guarantees an OHKO on a 207 HP / 165 SpD Ice Rider Calyrex.
- Rain-boosted Tera Water Weather Ball has a 75% chance to OHKO on a 207 HP / 165 SpD Ice Rider Calyrex.
- Rain-boosted Tera Water Weather Ball guarantees an OHKO on a 167 HP / 98 SpD Pelipper.
- Dragon Pulse has an 87.5% chance to OHKO on a 175 HP / 81 SpD Urshifu.
- Dragon Pulse guarantees a 2HKO on a 176 HP / 160 SpD Kyogre.
- Spe EVs allow it to outspeed Adamant Dragonite.
A rain counter that can unleash massive damage in both sun and rain. Against Ice Rider Calyrex, Walking Wake is almost always the preferred choice for Terastallization. Since its primary targets are Ice Rider Calyrex teams and Kyogre teams, and further Speed investment wouldn't significantly impact its first-move probability, I prioritized HP and Special Attack instead.
Usage Rate: 40%
Clefairy
@ Eviolite
Tera Type: Steel
Ability: Friend Guard
Nature: Bold
EVs: 177(252)-58-102(196)-80-93(60)-47(0, IV=15)
Moves: Follow Me/ Sing / Helping Hand / Protect
- Glacial Lance from 238 Atk Ice Rider Calyrex has a 27.7% chance to 2HKO.
- Sludge Bomb from 105 SpA Amoonguss has a 8.5% chance to 2HKO.
- Spe IVs allow it to underspeed Ice Rider Calyrex.
A crucial Pokémon against Ice Rider Calyrex teams, Clefairy plays a key role in disrupting Trick Room strategies. Moves like Encore and After You can be anticipated by opponents, but Sing is much harder to counter. Although the probability of Sing hitting and the target not waking up immediately is only 36.7% (0.55 × 0.67), the presence of Walking Wake alongside Clefairy often means landing just one Sing can secure victory. Additionally, since opponents must invest significant resources to set up Trick Room against Koraidon + Walking Wake, there are many cases where a single miss is tolerable, or where even an immediate wake-up still buys enough time. The Tera Type is Steel, chosen specifically to handle Chien-Pao + Dragonite.
Usage Rate: 40%
Rillaboom
@ Assault Vest
Tera Type: Water
Ability: Grassy Surge
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 207(252)-165(36)-126(124)-72-102(92)-106(4)
Moves: Wood Hammer / High Horsepower / Fake Out / U-turn
- Wood Hammer guarantees an OHKO on a 159 HP / 92 Def Flutter Mane.
- Ivy Cudgel from 165 Atk Hearthflame Ogerpon has a 12.5% chance to OHKO.
- Icicle Crash from 172 Atk Chien-Pao has a 6.2% chance to OHKO.
- Ice Beam from 202 SpA Kyogre is a guaranteed 3HKO when factoring in Grassy Terrain recovery.
The Tera Type is Water, chosen specifically to improve matchups against Kyogre teams. The stat spread follows the optimal balance between offense and bulk, calculated based on the comprehensive stat index (assuming a first-move probability P = 0.3). I debated between High Horsepower and Grassy Glide but ultimately chose High Horsepower due to the team's overall weakness to Poison-types like Sneasler and Galarian Weezing. Since Rillaboom is not intended to function as a primary sweeper in this team, a strong Ground-type move was more valuable.

Game Plan Against Each Legendary Pokémon
Against Miraidon

I usually lead with Koraidon
+ Flutter Mane
against Tailwind teams (e.g., Whimsicott or Tornadus) and Koraidon
+ Chi-Yu
otherwise. Landing Icy Wind against Tailwind users is crucial—even if the opponent’s Tailwind setter is holding Covert Cloak, lowering the Speed of its partner is still highly valuable. Koraidon is often played aggressively from the start, while Tera is typically reserved for Chi-Yu.
Against Ice Rider Calyrex
(
,
)

I lead with Koraidon
+ Walking Wake
. If the opponent leads with Ice Rider Calyrex, I immediately Tera Walking Wake. If preventing Trick Room is unreliable, I use U-turn with Koraidon to pivot into Clefairy. The outcome of the game largely depends on how many times Walking Wake can fire off Water-type moves.
Against Shadow Rider Calyrex

I generally lead with Flutter Mane
+ Rillaboom
against Tailwind teams and Koraidon
+ Chi-Yu
otherwise. However, all six possible lead combinations are viable depending on the matchup. I often use Rillaboom to create a favorable board position and then aim to sweep with Fire-type moves from Koraidon or Chi-Yu. Tera is usually used on either Flutter Mane or Koraidon.
Against Kyogre

I lead with Flutter Mane
+ Walking Wake
against Tailwind teams and Walking Wake
+ Rillaboom
otherwise. While conventional wisdom suggests not immediately knocking out the opponent’s Tailwind setter, in this team’s case, Tornadus should be prioritized as a target. Dragon Pulse from Walking Wake is an important move in this matchup. Tera is usually used on Rillaboom.
Against Terapagos
(
)
I lead with Flutter Mane
+ Rillaboom
against Tailwind teams and Koraidon
+ Flutter Mane
otherwise. I typically use Rillaboom to create favorable board positions, allowing Koraidon or Chi-Yu to sweep. The opponent’s Flutter Mane is a high-priority target. Tera is typically used on Chi-Yu.
Against Zamazenta
(
)
I usually lead with Koraidon
+ Flutter Mane
or Koraidon
+ Chi-Yu
. In this matchup, utilizing Clefairy to increase my attackers’ turn count is crucial, and Helping Hand often plays a key role. Tera is used on Clefairy against Chien-Pao + Dragonite teams, and otherwise on either Chi-Yu or Koraidon.
Results
・PJCS Qualifiers Round 2 (Global Challenge): 28 wins, 10 losses, 1743 rating, 30th place.
・Ranked Battle Season 27 (Doubles): 61 wins, 31 losses, 1903 rating, 96th place.
My gameplay was far from polished, and I made plenty of mistakes, but I frequently turned games around from disadvantageous positions, which underscored the inherent strength of the team. One of the most challenging matchups for this Ability-dependent team was Galarian Weezing
. I had a 1-2 record against it throughout the qualifiers, but I managed to clutch a victory in my 38th match, the one that secured my qualification. This proved that with enough effort, even difficult matchups can be overcome.
I felt a great sense of accomplishment in building a team I was truly satisfied with. I’ll keep working to create even better teams in the future. Thank you for reading all the way through—knowing that you found this report interesting and worth your time means the world to me.
